Getting Started
First, we’d recommend pulling out the appropriate workbook, Level 1 (Pre-K) Level 3 (Kindergarten), Level 5 (1st grade), or Level 7 (2nd grade) to view the page titled “Lesson Overview”. If you do not have a working device to play the DVDs, no problem! Simply visit the website listed at the bottom of the page, which now houses all of the DVD content to access from any web-enabled device (my.hookedonphonics.com). Next, navigate to the corresponding video on the DVD or the corresponding Level on the website to watch the “Start Here” video for an overview of how to use the program.
If applicable to your child’s current reading level, you'll find The Alphabet Song by clicking the “Extras” tabs (Levels 1 & 3). After watching these videos, you and your child will work through the workbook together until you reach a page that prompts you to take out the flashcards, watch the DVD/ go to the website to watch the corresponding Lesson videos, or pull out a storybook on pages titled "Storybook". You can read the book together (for Pre-K) or your child will read it all on their own in the Kindergarten - 2nd grade levels (hooray!)
When to use the App
The Hooked on Phonics Learn to Read box kit program was developed prior to the release of the App, and therefore does not match the App content 1:1. Most families enjoy using the App as a complement to the physical materials provided in the box kits. In this scenario, you and your child would work through a particular lesson according to the workbook instructions, then open the App and navigate to the corresponding content to watch videos and complete the practice activities there.
On the other hand, you may use the App as a primary learning source. In this scenario, we'd recommend having your child first complete the appropriate grade-level activities within the App, then complete the corresponding activities in the workbook. Please note, for children in the Pre- K level, you'll have to skip around in the workbook if you go this route, since the order of letter introduction is not in alphabetical order within the App.
Here’s a breakdown of steps within the App by grade level:
Pre-reader World
Steps 1-12 - Pre-K
Learn to Read World
Steps 1-6 - Kindergarten
Steps 7-12 - Kindergarten/1st Grade transition
Steps 13-18 - 1st Grade
Steps 19-30 - 2nd Grade
We suggest trying out both of these strategies to see which option suits your family best.
